Review: The Joker Blogs - Series 1

The Joker Blogs is a very professional fan-made web series. Taking place in the Nolanverse in between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, it is chronicles in found footage format the Joker's stay at Arkham Asylum, wherein he undergoes therapy with his doctor, Harleen Quinzel. As the Joker puts a plot together, and starts getting to people, if anyone's going to change, it's not going to be him. Loaded with mythology gags, this series is both funny, suspenseful, and well acted.

The highlight here is Scott McClure as the Joker, known in the series as "Patient 4479." While no one can truly duplicate Heath Ledger's performance, Scott McClure comes pretty darn close. Suffice it to say, he nails it in his impression of Heath Ledger's Joker. He certainly gave me a fright when I was watching this for the first time. He's just that scary. Fittingly enough, the series is dedicated to the late actor. Every other actor in this series performs their roles with exceptional poise, from Steven Molony as Dr. Jeremiah Arkham to Joy Dolo as Pearl. The production design is also pretty sweet, or at any rate good for a no-budget web series. The second series, I believe, actually has a budget to work from.

One odd thing about this series is that it's a series based in the Batman universe, or at least the Nolanverse, but there's very little Batman in it. That's because it's all about the Joker, and the things he does. Batman is relegated to the periphery in this tale, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. As much as I like the Caped Crusader, this is the Joker's series.

In the end, The Joker Blogs Series One is a phenomenal piece of work. My favorite episodes were the series retrospective in Episode 18 and "Get Me to the Church on Time." Mind you, though, this series is not for kids, and has a bit more blood on screen than The Dark Knight had, which was none. I remain waiting for the coming of Series 2, and for the resolution of the miniseries Further Evidence. So I guess I'll have to sit tight, because we've been waiting for it since like, July 2011, when the trailer came out. Seriously, Joker Blogs guys, let's hurry it up.

RATING: 10/10
