Review: The Politically Incorrect Guide to Science

This book, written by Tom Bethell, is an overview of various controversial scientific issues, ranging from the DDT ban to stem cell research to the Evolution/Intelligent Design debate, and many more. While each chapter could easily be their own books, this tome provides an excellent overview of the issues from a conservative viewpoint.

Firstly, these books offer a plethora of information on some of the most disputatious topics of today. Coming from the pen of a knowledgeable writer, Bethell writes with clarity and intelligence. There are footnotes aplenty as he deftly describes these subjects, debunking one commonly held "fact" of science after another. While I myself am no scientist, I do known that there is certainly room for discussion concerning these issues. No matter what you think of the opinion presented by Bethell, I would encourage all readers to keep an open mind as they read this book, which portrays a great deal of very convincing arguments. The only drawback is that some of the writing, while understandable, can get slightly dry at times, dragging on a bit as must be required for such an ambitious thesis.

In the end, this book is a must have for all science enthusiasts, combining informed writing with a style that can easily be understood by the layman. I wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone who might have an interest in the topics covered by the book.
