Bible Verse Sunday #57

On this first Bible Verse Sunday of the new year, today's verse is Isaiah 40:31:

"but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

The ESV Study Bible has this to say about the verse:

"wait for the Lord. Savoring God's promise by faith until the time of fulfillment. renew. Find endless supplies of fresh strength."

Today's sermon was the second in what I believe was a two-part series on discipleship. Specifically, the pastor talked about the sufferings that we must endure; the sufferings of sacrifice, discipline, and waiting. The pastor drew several metaphors from The Hobbit, stating incorrectly that the book was an allegory. I took him aside after the service and gently explained to him that J.R.R. Tolkien was not a fan of allegory, to say the least, and that he saw his books as having "applicability" - that is, a lesson which others could draw from it even though the author had not particular lesson in mind. Still, it was a pretty good sermon. In the High School service, it was mostly a recap of winter camp, including recordings of Pastor Jeremy giving short lessons relating to how to be truly wise. Winter retreat focused on a study in the book of Proverbs, and there was some talk about Solomon and Ecclesiastes as well.
